What is metabolism?

Metabolism refers to a network of biochemical reactions that convert nutrients into energy to support essential physiological functions, including breathing, circulation, and thermoregulation.

It involves two main processes: catabolism and anabolism. 

Catabolism, or degradative metabolism, breaks down macronutrients like carbohydrates, protein, and fats, into smaller molecules to release energy. Primarily, the macronutrients are converted into the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main energy currency of cells. 

Anabolism, also known as constructive or biosynthetic metabolism, uses ATP to build and repair tissues, synthesize biomolecules such as proteins and lipids, and support cellular maintenance.

“These processes occur continuously, even at rest,” explains Dr. Berg. “This baseline energy demand, referred to as the basal metabolic rate (BMR), supports the function of vital organs, including the lungs, brain, and heart.”

While BMR reflects energy needs at rest, total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) also includes physical activity and the thermic effect of food.

Metabolic activity is regulated by enzymes and hormones, including insulin (a glucose-regulating hormone), glucagon, and thyroid hormones, which coordinate energy production, storage, and expenditure.

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that alternates between fasting and time-restricted eating. 

There are various fasting regimens for individuals to choose from, with the most popular being the 16:8 intermittent fasting plan. This schedule involves fasting for 16 hours followed by an eight-hour eating window.

Other time-restricted patterns include 18:6 and 20:4, which extend the fasting period to 18 or 20 hours and limit meals to six or four hours.

Additional intermittent fasting regimens include:

  • Alternate-day fasting, which involves fasting every other day, with either no caloric intake or a reduced intake of 500 to 600 calories on fasting days.
  • 5:2 fasting, which consists of eating normally five days per week and restricting calories to 500 to 600 calories on two non-consecutive days.
  • One meal a day (OMAD) fasting, which is achieved by limiting food intake to one meal a day, allowing for a fasting duration of around 23 hours.

Intermittent fasting protocols are designed to be simple, flexible, and sustainable, making this a practical approach for supporting long-term metabolic health. 

How intermittent fasting affects metabolism

Intermittent fasting triggers several metabolic adaptations that influence how the body produces and uses energy. This leads to many potential health benefits for the metabolic system.

Here are five beneficial effects of intermittent fasting on the metabolism.

1. Increases fat oxidation and promotes ketosis

Fasting shifts metabolism toward fat utilization by depleting stored glucose, called glycogen, and increasing lipolysis, which is the breakdown of stored triglycerides into free fatty acids. 

These fatty acids are then mobilized and transported to the liver, where they can be converted into ketone bodies, or ketones.

Within 12 to 24 hours of fasting, glycogen availability declines, ketone production increases, and the body transitions into ketosis, a metabolic state in which the body relies on fat-derived ketones in place of glucose from daily food intake. 

2. May reduce insulin resistance

Intermittent fasting lowers blood glucose and insulin levels by reducing the frequency of food intake, allowing insulin to remain low for longer periods throughout the day. 

Chronically elevated insulin levels from frequent eating or high carbohydrate intake promote abdominal fat storage and contribute to insulin resistance, a condition in which cells become less responsive to insulin signaling.

Impaired insulin sensitivity can increase the risk of cardiometabolic conditions. Research published in StatPearls found that “…insulin resistance can lead to metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and type 2 diabetes.”

Over time, intermittent fasting may improve insulin sensitivity and support better glycemic control.

3. Enhances metabolic flexibility

Metabolic flexibility is the body’s ability to efficiently switch between using glucose and fatty acids as primary fuel sources. In the fed state, the body primarily utilizes glucose, whereas fasting shifts it towards ketone production.

A study published in Canadian Family Physician found that fasting led to measurable reductions in body weight and waist circumference within a few weeks, with participants losing up to 13 percent of their baseline body weight.

However, results can vary due to dietary habits, adherence, and metabolic health. When combined with a whole-foods-based low-carbohydrate diet, intermittent fasting may support more consistent and sustainable results for individuals attempting to lose weight.

Other factors that influence metabolic response

While intermittent fasting can affect metabolism, several lifestyle and physiological factors can also influence metabolic rate and efficiency. 

Here are five key factors that influence metabolic response.

1. Diet quality

Diets high in refined carbohydrates, seed oils, sugars, and ultra-processed foods can disrupt metabolic signaling, promote insulin dysfunction, and impair the body’s ability to effectively utilize fuel.

In contrast, a nutrient-dense, low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet rich in healthy fats, quality protein, and non-starchy vegetables promotes stable blood sugar and insulin levels while boosting fat burning.

2. Sleep quality

Poor sleep disrupts hormones involved in hunger and energy balance, leading to increased ghrelin, reduced leptin, and elevated cortisol levels. These changes can trigger cravings, increase calorie intake, and impair fat metabolism.

Sleep deprivation is also associated with reduced insulin sensitivity and impaired glucose metabolism, which may contribute to blood sugar imbalances and metabolic dysregulation. 

Prioritizing at least eight hours of consistent, restful sleep each night supports hormonal balance, metabolic efficiency, and overall health.
