Magnesium Dosage: How Much Magnesium to Take per Day

Ideal magnesium doses can vary depending on whether the goal is to maintain adequate magnesium levels or to correct a deficiency. The amount used for general supplementation may differ from doses taken for specific purposes, such as sleep support.

Discover how much magnesium to take per day and how to determine an appropriate dose based on individual needs.

How to choose a form of magnesium

Magnesium is a highly reactive mineral and must be bound to another compound in supplements to remain stable and absorbable. Common forms include magnesium glycinate, citrate, and oxide.

The form of magnesium is an important consideration because absorption varies between compounds. Magnesium glycinate is generally well absorbed, while magnesium oxide has relatively poor bioavailability.

A study published in Magnesium Research found that magnesium oxide had a fractional absorption of about four percent, indicating relatively poor bioavailability.

Choosing a more bioavailable form of magnesium, such as magnesium glycinate, is crucial for optimal support.

How much magnesium can you take per day?

Magnesium dosage depends on overall magnesium needs and the reason for supplementation.

For general supplementation, the daily amount can be divided between morning and evening to support magnesium needs throughout the day.

General magnesium dosage for men

Adult men generally require 400 to 420 milligrams of magnesium daily from food, beverages, and supplements combined.

General magnesium dosage for women

Adult women generally require 310 to 320 milligrams of magnesium daily from food, beverages, and supplements combined. The daily requirement increases to 350 to 360 milligrams during pregnancy.

Magnesium dosage for sleep

For sleep support, adults can aim to meet their total daily magnesium needs of 310 to 420 milligrams from food, beverages, and supplements combined. Magnesium supplements are often taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed.

How much magnesium is too much?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that the tolerable upper intake level (UL) for magnesium from supplements and medications is 350 milligrams daily for adults. This limit doesn’t include magnesium naturally present in food and was established primarily to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea and abdominal cramping.

Higher supplemental amounts may still be used therapeutically when magnesium levels are low, but dosage should be based on individual needs and tolerance.

A 2025 clinical guideline published in Nutrients notes that successful magnesium repletion may require at least 600 milligrams of magnesium daily.
