Hello, my name is Joya Smith. I’m a 63-year-old woman from Detroit, Michigan. I’m here sharing my story of how I transformed my health with keto and intermittent fasting.
Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
I spent my entire adult life living in an obese body. I suffered from blood pressure issues, severe asthma, and chronic arthritis.
I started my first diet at 12 years old. When I say I tried everything, I did. I tried Weight Watchers, a medical weight loss program with medication, and joined several gyms and exercise programs. In 2009, I even received lap band weight loss surgery. All of these produced temporary results. I would lose and gain weight over and over.
I felt like a complete failure. I began to believe that I was destined to live in my unhealthy body. As a result, my health was suffering. I had many hospitalizations for my asthma, and my arthritis was horrible. I was in unbearable pain and taking narcotics to control it. I’ve had many surgeries over the years as well.
How did you discover keto?
The knee replacement surgery was traumatic for me. It was incredibly painful. This was my rock bottom. My son shared keto with me. He told me he was having success.
I watched a documentary called The Magic Pill. I had never heard of keto. After watching the success stories, I wanted to try it. I researched the ketogenic diet and found Dr. Berg. I researched for 30 days.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
I started my keto and intermittent fasting journey on June 1, 2018. I weighed 335.5 lbs. I couldn’t believe how wonderful I began to feel. I had energy, and the arthritis pain began to improve. It seemed like the weight was melting off my body. I love keto! I cooked amazing meals and enjoyed sharing what I learned with others.
By January of 2020, my weight was 152 lbs.! I feel so amazing and love the way I look. Intermittent fasting has eliminated my cravings; my energy is through the roof!
If you could offer advice to someone starting keto, what would you say?
If I could share one thing with everyone, it would be this: Weight loss is a mental challenge more than a diet! I finally decided to make myself and my health a priority.
