Life before keto:
While he was working the midnight shift, Matthew would pack chips and candy for “lunch” and would munch them all night long. There came a day when he was shocked to discover that his weight had reached 275 pounds (125 kg). He couldn’t believe it. He even went so far as to try another scale. Unfortunately, it was true: his weight had reached a record high. That was the day he decided to make a change.
Like many, Matthew had struggled with maintaining a healthy weight for the longest time. After trying multiple diets with no luck, he made up his mind that this time he would stick with whatever was going to work. “I jumped in headfirst with Dr. Berg’s help,” he said.
After starting keto:
The first couple of weeks are always the hardest. Retraining your brain to eat only when you’re hungry, and not when you think you’re “supposed to” eat, takes some time. Matthew was able to rely on the support of his wife to get him through the more difficult times until the cravings subsided.
“I was going down a terrible path,” he said. “The greatest lesson I learned from Dr. Berg was that I needed to eat to live, not live to eat.”
Health improvements
Initially, Matthew would fast for 16 hours and have two meals a day. Now that his body has adjusted to keto, he eats one meal daily with great success. He feels 100 times better than he did when he started, with a lot more energy and confidence. And he lost 72 pounds (34 kg) in a little over five months.
Matthew feels he owes a lot of his success to Dr. Berg.
Advice for someone starting keto:
“Once you have conquered your own mind…you realize you can do whatever you want,” he says to anyone wanting to try keto. “No one can do it for you, and it is hard, but you can do it. You can! Believe in yourself and keep looking forward.”
Favorite ways to exercise:
Matthew goes to the gym three to four times a week for running or working with weights. He also enjoys taking walks with his wife and daughter.
