Life before keto:
Jana Crawford woke up on March 16, 2018, knowing she needed a change. Many others can probably relate to the way she was feeling that day. “I felt gross, I was tired, I was winded going up stairs,” she said. That was the day Crawford’s keto journey began.
Crawford has always struggled with being overweight, especially after being diagnosed with a thyroid condition. Although she’s always been active, it became part of her self-concept that she was the “big girl”–taller, broader, stronger, fatter. “I hated the title,” she said. “But I became her… or she became me.”
Discovering keto:
After seeing her younger brother find huge success with keto, Crawford knew exactly who to call when she was ready to take control of her weight. He gave her a keto shopping list and the recommendation to check out Dr. Berg’s videos. She watched everything she could find.
She had tried everything before finding keto; diets, weightlifting, running, and martial arts. With each, she’d see some success, but nothing would last. And although keto has been her most successful weight-loss endeavor, it didn’t come without challenges.
Crawford learned that she needed to be kinder and more compassionate to herself.
“I think some of the hardest lessons I’ve learned in this journey are to be patient, be gentle, be consistent, and some days be a whole lot of stubborn,” she said. “We are our own worst critics and some days are hard… really hard.”
Health improvements:
Since that day, Crawford has gone from a size 18 to a size 10, is down 40 pounds (18 kg), and has lost nearly 40 inches. At 47, she feels amazingly well and strong again. “I love it!”
It’s motivating for Crawford to compare recent photos to those from a year ago and see the new and improved version of herself smiling back. She’s gotten back into jiu-jitsu and runs regularly. She’s looking forward to who she’ll see in the mirror a year from now.
“I’m picking up steam, and nothing can stop me!” she says.
