Garry Sands's Story

In 2018, Garry Sands’ father suddenly passed away after struggling for years with what Sands now knows was metabolic syndrome. He was 68 and Sands was 34.

“My health was not good, having many of the [same] illnesses [as] my father: high cholesterol, hypertension, obesity, and no doubt pre-diabetes,” he said. “After the grief of his loss had passed, I realized I was exactly half his age. Had I really lived half my life?”

With his father’s death serving as the catalyst for his weight-loss journey, Sands went to his doctor.

“[My doctor's] only recommendation was to take yet another pill, making it three tablets a day,” said Sands, “two for blood pressure one for cholesterol. It was at this point I realized if I wanted to change my health I would have to do it myself.”

Someone recommended that he try intermittent fasting. He had some success with it but he wanted to learn more about it. Dr. Berg’s YouTube channel was the first resource he found on the subject, and there he also began learning about health and keto.

“[The main lesson learned from Dr. Berg] would be discovering metabolic syndrome and how it related to all my health issues,” said Sands. “More importantly, how I could fix them [with] keto and IF. [Dr. Berg] was an absolute game-changer for me. Everything fell into place and started to make sense.”

In March 2019 Sands began keto as well as an exercise routine three to four days per week. Every time he hit a plateau, he would turn to Dr. Berg’s videos for advice and motivation.

Although he found keto difficult in social situations, especially when alcohol was involved, he said that the best part was being able to play with his kids without getting tired after five minutes.

In six months of eating keto, Sands lost 98 pounds (44 kg). He was encouraged by his results every week.

“[I only] wish I could have given my dad this information before it was too late,” he said. “No one will do it for you. Your health is the best investment you will make.”
