First and Last Name Lianne Karla A. Bigornia 1. Tell us a brief summary of your story I have always been fat as a kid and I would eat anything and everything I wanted especially chips, candies, and chocolates. I didn’t exercise and I didn’t see the need to do that. I’m a Nurse and I worked night shifts for a BPO company. Because I had flexi-time I had more time to hang out and eat anytime. Basically, I didn’t take care of myself. On November 22, 2016, after eating, I had a headache and felt dizzy. I then went to the bathroom and I vomited twice, and was incontinent. I knew it was different and dangerous. The last sign was that I couldn’t see on my right eye. I then told my friend to call Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) and told them who I was and to call my father. I had a stroke. The stroke was due to Congenital AV Malformation. On the day of the stroke, I was 30 years old, 210 pounds, a height of 5’1”, my blood pressure hit 250 mmHg. I’ve been taking blood pressure and blood sugar medications before then. I had to start from scratch because I had Conduction Aphasia. Aphasia is the loss of the ability to express or understand speech which is caused by brain damage. It was hard for me because I had to learn the ABCs, reading, writing, and talking. I couldn’t say my parents’ names, neither could I say my own name. I also needed Occupational Therapy because my right hand had paresis. And I had hemi-spatial neglect on the right side. After the stroke, I decided to change my life for the better. I exercised every day and I followed the diet given at the hospital. I lost 20 lbs but then I hit a plateau for 2-3 months. Then I saw Dr. Eric Berg’s YouTube channel and I decided to do Keto and Intermittent fasting. I have lost 62 lbs on Keto and Intermittent fasting and I have lost a total of 82 lbs since the stroke. I no longer have Aphasia after 8 months of Speech Therapy, I have restored the function of my right fingers, and I can now see colors in my right field of vision. Now, I exercise – I box and do crossfit and enjoying it! I am a Miracle! And I am so excited for what the future holds. 2. How did you first learn about Dr. Berg? When I couldn’t lose any more weight, I then searched YouTube for ways to lose weight. The first video I saw on Dr. Eric Berg’s YouTube channel was “The real reason why Apple Cider Vinegar works”. Then I remember that I used to use ACV for my hair as an alternative shampoo and conditioner. So, it probably works! I then started to watch his videos especially about skin, hair, weight loss, exercise, etc. After watching his videos and understanding them, I finally decided to change my lifestyle. 3. What prompted you to start your weight loss journey? I never showed my family how sad I was while I was in the hospital because they were so happy that I was alive. I was sad because I might not be able to talk properly, walk, work and just be normal. One of the most amazing experiences on my journey was when I woke up and felt weird because I could see things and I couldn’t understand why so I googled: “stroke patients at night see” and I saw “Sleep” and I realized that I was “dreaming”. I felt so amazed when I read about it because I couldn’t dream after the stroke — but now I can! On November 22, 2016, I almost lost my life. I had a stroke. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I decided to change myself for a better future and I did! On January 2017, I exercised every day and followed the diet from the hospital. I lost 20 pounds and plateaued. A few months after, I stopped exercising because I was upset and felt hopeless because I couldn’t lose any more weight. Finally, on October 1, 2017, I started Keto and Intermittent Fasting and slowly adjust my meals until on December 10, 2017, I was able to do One Meal A Day (OMAD). Currently, I am on OMAD and loving it! 4. How did your support system help in this journey? My family and friends kept encouraging me to get better and helped me with things that I couldn’t do by myself. I didn’t tell my parents that I was doing Keto until I felt awesome and excited to share it to them. And because my parents and my sister are doctors, they understood what I was doing. My father also does OMAD and as a Doctor, he told me that it was the best thing for me. My family and friends also helped with the money not only for the hospital but therapy and exercise too. 5. How do you feel now compared to before? I feel like a new person! Everything was new for me — food, colors, smells, etc — while I was in the hospital. Even until now, every day is a new experience especially because of the stroke. And when I started keto and IF, I no longer feel tired and/or sleepy in the middle of the day. I no longer feel conscious because of my weight. I no longer crave food especially bread, pizza, chocolate and chips. 6. What were the major lessons you learned from Dr. Berg? Sleep is the most important thing you need to lose weight Apple Cider Vinegar can help you lose weight especially with lemon Coconut Oil is essential not only for weight loss but for hair, skin and nails too! Autophagy is the best thing about Keto and Intermittent Fasting Eat healthy to lose the weight and not the other way around! Many people thought that you should lose weight first then be healthy but that’s not the case at all! 7. What was the hardest part about losing weight? The hardest part about losing weight is doubting myself— because I was used to being fat, I would self-sabotage because I thought I didn’t deserve the success. 8. What is the best part? The best part was losing the weight and feeling amazing! It didn’t feel like I was on a diet at all! 9. What would you have done differently if you could do it all over again? If I could, I would have done keto and IF earlier but it’s all good. Everything happens for a reason. 10. What encouraged you to not give up? When I imagined how my father got the call about me and seeing me in the Emergency Room (ER) made my heart break. I didn’t want that to happen again. 11. What would you like to say to someone reading your success story? Never give up on yourself! All you need is faith, hope and love. 12. How much weight have you lost since starting keto? I have now lost 62 pounds on keto. 13. What is your favorite way to exercise? My favorite way to exercise is CrossFit. 14. What is your favorite keto recipe? My favorite keto recipe is eggnog!
