Best Liver Cleansing Shake for a Fatty Liver

author avatar Dr. Eric Berg 09/15/2024

The liver is a very important organ with so many functions in the body. So how can you keep it as healthy as possible? In this article, I'll share with you my recipe for the best liver cleansing shake for a fatty liver. It is easy to prepare, can be made entirely from frozen ingredients, and is super effective when it comes to a liver cleanse.

Unfortunately, many people experience liver disease and fatty livers due to various lifestyle and dietary habits. This can become very harmful for our bodies and can cause problems down the line. That is why keeping your liver healthy and keeping it detoxed can be so important. So why not give this shake recipe a try?

In this article, I will cover:

Let's start by taking a look at why we want to pay so much attention to the liver in the first place. What role does it play in the body, and why do we need to keep it healthy?

Essential functions of the liver

Many of us only vaguely understand what the liver actually does. We might know that it has something to do with filtering blood, and not much else. But did you know that the liver has wide ranging effects in the body?

In fact, the liver performs over 500 functions. These range from immune control to digestion to detoxification. It plays a key role in so many ways, and it can affect your overall health through many different pathways.

Some important liver functions include:

  1. Making bile.

  2. Making proteins.

  3. Detoxifying the body of toxins like drugs, chemicals, heavy metals, etc.

  4. Buffering excess hormones.

  5. Making cholesterol and lipoproteins.

  6. Turning ammonia into a less toxic substance called urea.

  7. Making glucose and glycogen.

Our livers are central to so many important bodily processes.

The liver works very closely with another important organ called the gallbladder. Together they produce bile and help break down fats. If you want to learn more about the gallbladder, watch my video here.

Unfortunately, many lifestyle and dietary habits can harm our liver health. From drinking too much alcohol to eating refined carbs, common daily habits can lead to damage and liver diseases such as a fatty liver.

What causes a fatty liver?

There are many different ways that we can damage our livers and find our liver function severely decreased. Our unhealthy habits add up over time, and our livers start to suffer as a result. Commonly, they can start to accumulate fat. This is called a fatty liver.

Some of the causes of this common problem include:

Over time, these habits and patterns can cause problems. They can cause the liver to build up with fat and toxins.

At first, we might not notice the impacts. In fact, our body can still function okay when the majority of our liver is damaged. But that doesn't mean that things aren't going wrong under the surface. That is why keeping our liver clean and healthy is so important.

Why you need to cleanse the liver

It is important to detox the liver so that it can function properly.

Liver damage and fatty liver disease can be very hard on the body. As I mentioned above, we might not always notice the symptoms at first.

But a fatty liver can have a long list of harmful consequences. These include:

  1. Inflammation and increased Fat Storing Hormone resistance.

  2. Scar tissue of the liver (cirrhosis).

  3. Decrease bile production.

  4. Decreased testosterone levels.

  5. Metabolic syndrome.

  6. Belly fat.

  7. Heart disease.

While most symptoms are asymptomatic (and won't show up until much of your liver is destroyed) a lot of the consequences like the ones listed above could be going on in the background without you even knowing it.

When things get really bad, we might start to notice things like bloating, right shoulder pain, yellowing eyes, skin issues, and a protruding belly. These are signs that the liver isn't doing well, and that we really need to reverse the problem.

Your body can function with much of the liver damaged, but you don't want to wait until most of it is destroyed and you have liver disease to do something about it.

Cleansing the liver on a regular basis and making detox a priority is very important. That can help you to stay healthy and avoid problems from running rampant under the surface undetected.

That's where this liver cleanse shake comes in. It is perfect for liver health maintenance.

My recipe for the best liver-cleansing shake

This shake is extremely powerful. It is like a liver cleanse on steroids. It is one of the best shakes for the liver, and it will actually help clean everything out and detox harmful toxins.

This shake is an enzyme-rich drink full of vitamins, minerals, and powerful phytonutrients that support your liver health.

It is a simple recipe, based on three easy-to-find veggies: kale, beet tops, and parsley.

The ingredients

  1. Kale. Kale is full of so many nutrients. It has 500 mg of potassium per cup. Potassium is needed to help keep things healthy and is really good for the liver and gallbladder. Kale also is rich in vitamins like A, C, and K. This vegetable is great for removing fat from the liver, and it is a great detox tool.

  2. Beet tops. These are another high-potassium food. In fact, they have one of the highest potassium contents you can get: 1300 mg of potassium per cup. That is a lot! Cut the tops off of the beets you buy at the grocery store, wash them, and freeze them. Beet tops are also great for increasing bile from the gallbladder.

  3. Parsley. Parsley doesn't get enough credit for its nutritional value. But it actually has more vitamin A than kale does, and it also has things like magnesium, zinc, and potassium in it. It is one of my top 9 superfoods on the planet. It is a bitter herb that is great for the liver and gallbladder. Again, it will really help with detox and liver cleanses.

You might have noticed that all three of these vegetables are bitter in flavor. If you have ever eaten any of them straight, you know they've got that certain bite to them. But it turns out that any vegetables that are bitter are really good for your liver. So these three bitter foods make great super food ingredients to add to your liver detox shake.

Directions

If you take the time to prep ahead of time, gathering your ingredients and having them on hand ready to use, this shake can take just minutes to prepare. It is a super simple process to whip up a batch. And with the right additions, it can taste pretty good, too.

So give it a try. Follow these 5 easy steps to make my favorite liver-cleansing shake.

Step 1: Keep your frozen ingredients on hand.

This shake is based on three vegetables, all of which can be purchased, washed, and then thrown right into the ice box for storage. This makes it super convenient. Day-of prep is a breeze when all you have to do is pull your ingredients out of the freezer and throw them in the blender. So keep a bunch of kale, beet tops, and parsley ready to go in your freezer.

Step 2: Put the veggies in your blender.

I use mostly kale, some beets tops, and then finish it off with a little parsley. Put your greens in, and then fill your blender almost to the top with water.

Step 3: Choose something to sweeten it up.

All of these vegetables are quite bitter. So I like to offset that bitterness with something a little bit sweet. Otherwise, the shake can be really hard to drink down. To camouflage that bitterness, there are a few options.

If you have a slow metabolism, I would try stevia or my kale shake mix. Berry-flavored liquid stevia is a great choice. About 10 drops will improve the flavor of the shake dramatically. But if you don't like the flavor of stevia, try a little scoop of my kale shake mix. It is another way to improve the flavor if you have a slow metabolism.

For the average person with a good metabolism, using a little bit of berries is a nice choice. I like to use a small handful of blueberries and strawberries. I keep these frozen and then just throw them in with the veggies before blending.

Step 4: Blend.

Blend the mixture until it is smooth. The color will come out somewhat brown, because you have mixed the green and red from the beets. Pour the shake into a glass jar.

Step 5: Enjoy!

Drink up, and enjoy the benefits of this super healthy shake.

I will down one of these early on in the morning, and then another one during the day. Do not drink this before you go to bed. It is like a diuretic, and it will cause you to have to pee during the night if you drink it too late.

Take cruciferous formula, too

In addition to this shake, I recommend using my Whole Cruciferous Food formula as well.

It is made from all organic vegetables. And it is packed with nutrition, especially those nutrients that are really helpful for ridding the liver of toxins and keeping things cleaned out. Cruciferous vegetables, it turns out, are perfect for helping rid the body of toxins.

This supplement is made from a wide spectrum of ingredients, including organic beets, Brussel's sprouts, kale, cabbage, radish, sea kelp, garlic, and turmeric.

It is really one of the best ways to do a liver cleanse on a daily basis. And it won't give you unpleasant detoxification symptoms.

Three of these capsules a day will give you a whole bunch of nutrition. Plus, it has powerful phytonutrient effects like antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to support your whole-body health.

Lifestyle tips for a healthy liver

Toxins are everywhere in our society. They are in our air, our soil, our water... The liver is put under a lot of pressure to do its job of detoxing. So it is no surprise that it sometimes has a hard time keeping up.

It often needs a little bit of help and support. Especially when we are putting an even heavier load on it with our unhealthy habits that keep it from being able to function at its highest capacity.

You will be well on your way to a good detox and cleanse if you are drinking this liver shake and taking a cruciferous supplement.

But if you really want to prevent liver problems and take fat off of the liver, these others lifestyle tips are important to consider as well. They can help you support your liver the best way that you can.

For liver health, make sure that you:

These lifestyle changes are very healthy for the liver and for your body as a whole.
