Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
My name is Bryant Moore, and I’m 57 years old. I grew up in Virginia Beach and live in Matthews, NC. I’ve ranged from simply overweight to morbidly obese my entire adult life.
This was my relationship with food: I ate and drank what I wanted, when I wanted, and for most of that time, I didn’t really equate my weight with whether or not I was “healthy.”
It took a long time for me to admit that my relationship with food and my weight were making me sick and knocking years off my life. Years in the sense of how limited my life had become, and years in the sense that, in all probability, I had shortened my lifespan considerably. My wife admitted how long she had been terrified she would lose me to a heart attack, to diabetes, to any number of disasters as a direct result of my weight.
I started having such pain in my knees that I could barely walk. I had one knee replacement surgery done, but by the time the second needed to be done, I was too overweight to safely have surgery.
In 2015, I was diagnosed with a chronic metabolic disorder and my A1C was elevated. I was immediately put on several medications and told I should go on a low-fat, lean protein diet. Despite the medications and all the attempts I made to eat “well,” my blood sugar led to other health conditions, which I needed surgery for. I was the only person under 60 getting cataract surgery that day.
How did you discover keto?
Slowly but surely, I got angry. I got angry that when I looked around, it seemed as obvious as daylight that everything we were being sold about nutrition was wrong. It had to be, or the number of sick people, people with cancer, obese people, and diabetics in this country wouldn’t have increased so astronomically. I got angry that the best the traditional medical establishment could do for me was slap me with a prescription for a medication that, I was told, I would need to take for the rest of my life because “diabetes is a progressive disease.” I didn’t buy it. So, I started looking for answers elsewhere. That’s when I found Dr. Berg.
Dr. Berg explained the science behind what was happening in my body every time I ate. I will never forget when I learned the two most valuable pieces of information that changed everything for me. In one of his videos, Dr. Berg simply stated:
– Every time we eat, our body produces insulin.
– And in the presence of even a small bit of insulin, all fat burning stops.
I remember having that “eureka!” moment! He explained insulin resistance in a way I could understand. He explained how different nutrients actually worked. I didn’t feel like he was trying to sell me something. I liked his manner and that he seemed to genuinely care about educating people.
One of the biggest changes happened when I watched his video about all the various types of artificial sweeteners and their effects on insulin due to their glycemic index—a term I had never heard of. Before that, I thought I was doing everything right—so why wasn’t I losing weight? Why did I have all these other issues? As it turned out, the gallons of iced tea I was making every week contained a cup of Splenda in each batch. It was from Dr. Berg’s video that I first learned about the glycemic impact of certain foods and the damage the maltodextrin in Splenda was doing to me.
As soon as I started implementing what I was learning, the change was dramatic. I became hooked on learning more. Starting with suggestions from Dr. Berg’s videos and writings, I gradually broadened my scope of research. I discovered that the information we need is out there—it just isn’t coming from where it should be—our family doctors.
While I was learning, I was also putting into practice Dr. Berg’s recommendations. I started doing keto—the right way. I also incorporated intermittent fasting into my life. I have been doing OMAD since the start. What I discovered was… it was easy! With the right knowledge, with the right nutrition from the food I was eating, plus a few supplements I thought might help my particular issues, it wasn’t just easy; it became effortlessly natural, and it felt great! What I found was that it was a lifestyle I actually really enjoyed. I learned how important every single thing we put in our mouths really is, and went beyond just keto to finally eliminate all processed food and seed oils.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
My initial goal wasn’t weight loss; it was health, and the first thing that happened was that my wife expressed her astonishment and joy at how healthy I appeared. After years of being sedentary, I suddenly had more energy than I could use. My skin, my hair, my eyes, even my fingers and toenails looked healthy again.
And the pounds started falling off. In the last 8 months, I have lost over 80 pounds. I have gone from 296 lbs. to 210 lbs.! My bloodwork is all back into the normal range.
My transformation was total; not just physical, but mental, and emotional too. For years, I had been angry and depressed. I snapped at everyone and was generally kind of a jerk. My business suffered, my marriage suffered, and my family suffered. But the changes in my body chemistry affected changes in my brain. For the first time in many years, I was just…happy again. Myself.
A great deal of the pain in my knee, which had been caused by the weight and inflammation, went away. When I was young, I loved to hike; after 30 years, I am hiking again. I am hopeful I can put that 2nd knee replacement surgery off for many years or possibly not need it at all.
Best of all, my wife was inspired by my success to make similar changes, and the effects were just as remarkable. She, too, found videos by Dr. Berg that addressed her specific challenges. In less than 3 months, she has lost 20 lbs., the oppressive and near constant hot flashes she was having have gone away, and she too has more energy and feels better.
Other family members and people in my life have been similarly inspired, and I feel grateful to be able to share what I have learned. My wife and I both feel as if we have been given an immense gift: the gift of discovering our potential for better health, which we had both given up on. We feel as if we have finally cut through all the noise and learned the truth about diet and the importance of nutrition, and how many of the health problems that modern Western medicine told us we could not cure could be resolved simply by changing what we eat and when we eat it.
Any other details you want to share?
The gift is more years, and much better years than we believed we could ever have. I can sincerely say that none of this would have happened without Dr. Berg. The knowledge he has given me, and my family, is immense, profound, and cannot be overstated.
Dr. Berg taught me how to get my life back.
I will never be able to adequately express my gratitude for this gift. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Bryant Moore
