How did you discover keto?
My name is Michael Brice. I am 47 years old and live in NC. I first discovered the keto diet by watching a show called “Fit to Fat to Fit.” I didn’t have a complete understanding of keto, and with bad eating habits, I found myself trying dirty keto without results.
What did your diet look like prior to adopting keto?
I overate all the time and had a serious sweet tooth. I enjoyed eating during the day and always having sweets late in the day or even in the middle of the night. If I woke up in the middle of the night, I always found myself tiptoeing into the kitchen to eat a donut or two at 1 AM.
I started clean keto a little less than two years ago. Due to being overweight and having unhealthy eating habits, a few years ago, my children’s mother passed away from cancer. I became their full-time hope, and between the many different variables of making sure I was there for them all the time, it became stressful, and this led me back to eating very unhealthily and not getting much sleep.
Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
I had a health scare while exercising to try to start losing weight. I went to urgent care, which referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist advised that, at my age and weight, I really needed to get a primary care provider (PCP). I found my current PCP at that time, and back in 2020, I decided to go on a 40-day water fast.
My doctor monitored my kidney functions, etc., during this time since he knew I was dead set on doing it. At that time, he was seeing me every six months because I was type 2 diabetic, I had fatty liver, I was also on cholesterol medications, and had asthma. My wife was afraid because she would hear me stop breathing several times a night (sleep apnea).
At this point, I was 365 lbs. At the end of my 40-day fast, my doctor suggested OMAD and referred me to Dr. Berg’s YouTube page. This was a gold mine for teaching the benefits of doing keto the right way and intermittent fasting regularly.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
I now follow a clean, strict keto formula, use Dr. Berg’s supplements, and I am now over 130 lbs. lighter. I no longer have sleep apnea.
If you could offer advice to someone starting keto, what would you say?
For anyone thinking about starting keto, I would definitely advise not only following Dr. Berg but also listening and applying. Give yourself time and trust the process. Most importantly, know that you’re worth the fight and that a diagnosis is not a life sentence; it’s a comma on your road to happiness.
I usually do not like rejection, but when CVS kicked me out of their system because I had not had a refill in so long, it was most welcome. I was once diagnosed as morbidly obese; now I am overwhelmingly overjoyed. I’ve now turned my wife onto Dr. Berg and his teachings, and I couldn’t be happier.
