I’m Caley, and I’m 36 years old. I’m from Hampshire, Southern England.
Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
I’ve lived with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) since I was about 17 years old. For years, I was misdiagnosed, until finally, at 17, a doctor told me what I had. Unfortunately, I wasn’t given any real guidance on how to manage it.
For a long time, I struggled with weight gain and difficulty losing it, bad skin, insulin resistance, and a very irregular, often non-existent menstrual cycle.
To maintain my weight, I had to follow a very low-calorie diet; never more than 800 calories a day. It was awful. I felt miserable and deprived.
At 28, I became pregnant with my first child. It was a complete surprise, as I hadn’t been trying. I gained over 40 pounds during the pregnancy, and although my baby weighed just 6 pounds at birth, I struggled to lose the excess weight.
I returned to a low-calorie diet, replaced meals with shakes, and while I did lose most of the weight, it came at a cost. My hair started falling out, my nails became weak, my periods nearly stopped, and I was constantly exhausted.
Three years later, I got pregnant with my second child and gained 50 pounds. This time, I vowed to lose the baby weight in a healthy way.
How did you discover keto?
That’s when everything changed. I started researching PCOS, insulin resistance, and low-carb, high-fat diets. I found Dr. Berg on YouTube, and within two weeks, I had watched nearly all of his videos. I took notes, made shopping lists, and bought a blood ketone monitor. Then I started following a keto diet.
It dawned on me that before keto, I was essentially starving myself and then relying on something sugary at night just to stay conscious. It was a terrible, unsustainable cycle.
How does an average day of eating/fasting look for you on keto?
I began keto with three meals a day: typically eggs, fatty meats, and cheese with green veggies or a salad, with no snacks.
After a month, I implemented intermittent fasting based on Dr. Berg’s advice, gradually pushing my first meal to midday. Eventually, I ate only between 12 PM and 5 PM.
My meals became simple but satisfying:
- cheese and eggs
- tuna with mayonnaise
- steak or burgers
- BLT salads with olives
- salmon and broccoli in cheese sauce
- handfuls of nuts
How has your health improved since you started keto?
I lost 50 pounds in about five months back in 2018, and I’ve maintained that weight ever since.
My energy levels are through the roof, and my body looks and feels better than ever. Unlike before, I’m not losing muscle—just fat. My PCOS symptoms have drastically improved:
- My skin is clear and healthy.
- My hair is thicker.
- My period now comes every 35–45 days, which is a huge improvement.
Any other details you want to share?
I’m deeply grateful for all of Dr. Berg’s advice and content. PCOS can be incredibly difficult, and many people still don’t fully understand it—including doctors. Dr. Berg’s guidance helped me take back control of my health in a way I never thought possible.
Thank you, Dr. Berg. I couldn’t have done this without you.
