Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
My journey began with a health crisis. I was not originally intending to lose weight, but in November 2022, I had a gallbladder attack after eating fried food. I had no idea what it was at the time, but I had right flank pain for over a week. It happened again in December 2022, again after eating fried food. I don’t normally eat that way, but both incidents were during the holidays, and I was not being careful with what I ate.
I got scared and started doing some research. Under no circumstances did I want to have my gallbladder removed, but I suspected that was the problem. I consulted with a couple of doctors, and surgery was their only suggestion for me. My mom had her gallbladder removed when I was a teenager, and she has suffered with digestive problems ever since. I wanted to heal myself and avoid the surgery.
How did you discover keto?
Somehow, I found Dr. Berg on YouTube, and I started binge-watching his videos.
I figured out that my right flank pain was related to my gallbladder, and that my right shoulder pain that I have been having for two years was also a result of a lack of bile and an angry gallbladder.
So, I took Dr. Berg’s advice, and I started taking bile salts for my gallbladder and TUDCA for my liver. I also started to eliminate processed foods, sugar, gluten, and grains. I never wanted to do a keto diet, but I hadn’t understood how to do it correctly before. So, I did more research on a healthy keto diet and started to implement those strategies.
Then I attempted to start intermittent fasting, which terrified me. I have always been the person who carries a protein bar in my purse and is planning my day around my next snack or meal in order to avoid a headache every day.
How does an average day of eating/fasting look for you on keto?
The first thing I did was eliminate my morning protein shake, which was full of sugar. Also, many protein powders are full of chemical additives and other junk that I need to get out of my body. So, I substituted a bulletproof coffee made with organic coffee, grass-fed butter, and liquid stevia, and I would blend it in my blender. This makes it froth up beautifully, and it is so delicious. It helped hold me over until lunchtime.
My usual lunch time was 11 AM. I slowly delayed my lunch over a few weeks, moved it to noon, then 1 o’clock, and eventually I could make it until 3 PM without being hungry. At 3 PM, I would eat a huge meal. I will post some examples of my meals. These filled me up so much that I eventually could eliminate dinner. Or I would just eat an extra salad around 7 o’clock if I were hungry.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
I expected to lose a little weight just from removing sugar from my diet. I am a total sugar addict. But I was never expecting to drop over 20 lbs. I started at 140 lbs., and now I am down to 116 lbs. I haven’t weighed this since high school! This weight loss came without even exercising! All I could handle was walking a couple of times a week.
Dr. Berg has changed my life! I feel amazing and no longer a slave to eating several small meals a day. I feel liberated and in charge of my health! My next goal is to build muscle.
