Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto? 

That wasn’t the case two years ago, as I was 30 lbs. heavier. My point is that as a Type 2 diabetic in rural NW Florida, I’ve struggled with diets as there are no regional incentives to eat better, and the main response from area docs is “here, take this.” 

On top of everything else, I was a certified community health worker a few years ago, trying to inspire others to eat right, and wasn’t following my own rules. I’m good at marketing from the standpoint of what inspires me to get me off the couch to take action. A brief lecture won’t do it. Pass the chips, please.  

Fed up with frequent blood tests, standing in line at the pharmacy for Metformin and Glipizide (particularly during COVID), I thought there had to be a better way. 

I turned to Dr. Berg’s videos to learn more about how the liver and pancreas work and how they respond to certain foods. I wasn’t interested in getting sexy. 

How does an average day of eating/fasting look for you on keto? 

To stick with a diet, I had to look at foods I didn’t like (kale – yuck!) and started looking at those like medicine. Is the taste of kale better than medicine? Well, yes. Do I have to stand in a pharmaceutical line to get it? No. Then, make the trade. Add a few blueberries to it, avocado, and make it tastier. Now, it’s my daily lunch with some healthy alterations.  

I have fallen off the “keto wagon” during the holidays and trips to central Florida theme parks, and my local rural grocery store chain doesn’t carry grass-fed beef or other healthy choices for food quality. However, Dr. Berg’s videos are making me focus on wiser choices when holidays and solo trips do roll around. Sorry, Dr. Berg, but I fall on my knees when I see a frozen butter beer (kids drink) at Universal Studios and fall to that sugar god only once or twice a year. I know, ketosis. It is on my mind. 

I have cut out all alcohol (for 7 years), all breads, pastas, and soft drinks (I do slip a few times a year with diet colas). I’m consuming your electrolytes in water during my workday. 

How has your health improved since you started keto? 

My liver seems to be responding well, as I now have better insight into understanding what a fatty liver is all about and how to minimize/reduce insulin resistance. I always thought the pancreas was at fault for not making enough insulin, and now I understand how too much insulin in my body, caused by resistance, could be doing me in physically. That led me to Dr. Berg’s videos on insulin resistance and the power of intermittent fasting. 

I got serious with keto and intermittent fasting in 2022 when I lost my desk job and weighed about 170. I dropped 4 waist sizes that year.  

I’m 60 years old and today feel good when I take my shirt off at sporting activities, and heads turn.

2. I was introduced to intermittent fasting through Dr. Berg’s videos, so I now skip breakfast (saves money, dirty dishes, and time when I need to get to work, which are helpful incentives to stick with this once challenging behavior), which has shown remarkable drops in morning glucose levels.  

3. Keto plus the push mowing (daily exercise) have contributed to the bigger, healthier picture, with the consequence of feeling more comfortable in public with my shirt off, and that makes me feel so good, I want to keep going. The incentives are very much alive. I haven’t been to an area doc since COVID.
