Life before keto:
Maricel is a military wife and first-time mom who recently found that she was spending her time cooking, binge eating, and finding comfort in food. Once, as she was taking a shower, she looked down to find that she couldn’t see her feet.
“How hilarious, right?!” said Maricel. “I don’t want to make this seem like a funny story, but I never had this experience before, and I realized that it was time to change my lifestyle.”
Maricel gave birth to her daughter in 2017 and didn’t want to teach her that living an unhealthy lifestyle was OK. Inspired by the goal to be better for her family and especially her child, Maricel started eating clean and trying intermittent fasting (IF).
When she was looking for information online about IF, she found Dr. Berg’s YouTube videos, which then led her to learn about keto. It was Dr. Berg who taught Maricel about the most appropriate and efficient approaches to a keto diet and intermittent fasting.
After starting keto:
For Maricel, the hardest thing to overcome was her binge eating, especially when it came to carbs. She would surrender to pizza and junk food every now and then.
“Before I started the keto diet, I was eating healthy foods together with intermittent fasting. I would feel that I didn’t have enough to eat. But succumbing to my temptation made me realize that the ketogenic diet is much better,” said Maricel. “Today, I follow a pescatarian ketogenic lifestyle with a 20:4 intermittent fasting, and I’ve never felt better.”
With the support of her family, Maricel said that following the keto way of eating meant finally getting out of her comfort zone and embracing her body. Gone is the feeling of laziness and tiredness; she has more energy to do activities with her daughter. “I decided to embrace the better me!” she said.
Health improvements:
After starting her weight loss journey in October 2018, Maricel lost 30 pounds (14 kg) through healthier eating, exercise, and intermittent fasting. Then, she lost another 20 pounds (9 kg) after incorporating keto, for a total of 50 pounds (23 kg) of weight loss in six months.
Advice for someone starting keto:
“There will be ups and downs, but we just have to get back up every time and think about why we push ourselves to become better,” said Maricel. “Nobody is perfect, everyone makes mistakes, but some mistakes will teach you lessons and make you become a better person.”
