Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
I have been overweight for around 15 years. Two years ago, I was 55 years old and weighed 80 kilos (176 lbs.). I was quite active growing up, cycling, roller-skating, and wakeboarding till my mid-30s. Then I stopped. My diet was eating anything I wanted.
I smoked from 18 years to 45 years old and drank a few times a month. I never really gave my health much thought till I noticed things were not right with me.
I had my first cardiac event when I was 50, a major one. I started to look after myself, but just giving up sugar wasn’t enough, and I still had a stressful job.
I had a second 4 years later, and the heart specialist told me, as I was young, 55 at the time, it would be to my benefit to have a bypass. So, I had a triple bypass in Sept 2020.
After my surgery, I took ten weeks off to heal and went back to work and life. I exercised more and ate what I thought was healthier. By early 2022, I had put 10 kilos back on from where I was after the hospital. My GP doctor said, ‘You’re not taking your health seriously’. I walk every second day, haven’t smoked for 10 years, and changed my diet. What more can I do? He couldn’t tell me, just looked at me and said I needed to do more, and upped my tablets. I was on a lot of medication.
How did you discover keto?
I went home that day, determined to find a solution. Researching diets and health, I came across Dr. Berg and Keto on YouTube, as well as low carb down under.
After watching and listening for a few weeks, I decided to give it a go.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
After a couple of weeks of keto and intermittent fasting of 16:8 (can’t thank my wife enough for supporting me and researching recipes), I started to see improvement in my health and weight loss. In the next 6 months, I lost 15 kilos (33 lbs.). I am not a big person, I am 162cm (5’3”) tall, so 15 kilos was a lot. I am now 58 kilos (127 lbs.), a total loss of 22 kilograms (48 lbs.), and my fat percentage is 19%.
For the last 4 months, I have started calisthenics and have gone back to roller skating.
My outlook on life and my heart health have changed for the better forever. I am down to the lowest level of blood pressure medication and cholesterol tablets. My body is in the best shape it has ever been.
Any other details you want to share?
The best advice I can give to anyone reading my journey is that you, too, can overcome any obstacles and reverse years of ignorance and abuse. Keto and intermittent fasting work, and the negativity over them is not justified.
Thanks to Dr. Berg and his guidance, I have been given a second chance to live a longer and healthier life.
Sincerely, Andrew.
