Mark Discovered Keto, Lost 48 Pounds, and Reversed Long‑Term Health Risks 

Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto? 

I am 66 years old, just over 6 feet tall, and in reasonably good health, although I have been on blood pressure meds for several years. My weight has actually placed me in the obese category for a number of years. I have been prediabetic for as long as I can remember. I have also been a regular and heavy consumer of alcohol for decades.  

My highest weight within recent memory was about 243 lbs., with my BMI around 33, well into obese territory. I had lost about 10 pounds a couple of years ago butrapidly gained it back by the time my doctor saw me again. She told me I was at risk for a heart attack or stroke within the next 10 years. But my eating habits never really changed, and I continued to drink. 

How did you discover keto? 

I came across Dr. Berg’s YouTube channel late last year, and the first video I watched was about alcohol and what it was doing to my body. I was especially amazed at how alcohol affects the development of visceral fat and how it basically takes the liver offline so that it can’t perform the functions it needs to deal with the toxins.  

After watching that video and one other by someone else, I decided to stop drinking cold turkey. Mind you, I had “stopped” many times before. My last drink of alcohol of any kind was on January 10, 2023. I IMMEDIATELY experienced positive results in how I slept, felt, functioned, and thought. I also began losing weight. I had absolutely no problem with the cessation, no adverse effects, and no craving whatsoever. It was such a blissful feeling to no longer have those toxins in my body. 

I had heard of the keto diet before and had previously followed some modified versions of keto. I would still eat French fries, bread, etc., but would try to eat more protein. Clearly, I was only kidding myself.  

Seeing that Dr. Berg had hundreds of videos on the subject, I began watching. I immediately began the real version of keto. That was shortly after stopping the alcohol.  

How has your health improved since you started keto?   

The weight began falling off, and I was feeling literally like a new person. I was sleeping like a baby, had tremendous energy, and experienced greatly improved cognition. My skin and general appearance were radically changing. 

This week, I went to my doctor for my annual checkup (after doing lab work). The nurse had me step on the scale, and I was 195 lbs., 48 lbs. down from my highest weight. She asked, “What did you do?!” My BMI was 26.4, just above “normal.” My goal weight is 180–185. 

My lab work was great. My A1C was in the normal range, and my doctor said, “You are no longer prediabetic.”
