How did you discover keto?
My name is Duane Jones, and I am 49 years old from Calvin, KY. I had heard of the keto diet prior, but thought it was like many other fad diets, just boasting quick results, but unsustainable.
What did your diet look like prior to adopting keto?
My diet consisted of tons of carbs and coffee with sugar. Sunday dinners with family were carb-loaded, and we had a sweet dessert every Sunday.
Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
In October 2020, I was involved in a motor vehicle accident, injured my spine, and was unable to be active. As a result of having been stuck at home, unable to be active, I went from 260 lbs. to 298 lbs.
I started the diet around February 19th after a doctor’s appointment with an ortho surgeon and saw my weight skyrocketing. After that, I stumbled upon Dr. Berg’s videos and started keto with intermittent fasting.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
Currently, I weigh 252 lbs.
How does an average day of eating/fasting look for you on keto?
My diet consists of bacon, 3 eggs, cottage cheese with blueberries, and strawberries. Second meal: fresh salmon, or grilled chicken or beef with lots of fresh steamed veggies. I tend to fast for 16 hours for several days, then fast for 30 hours for a few days.
I wouldn’t say I made mistakes, but I understand that many healthy foods in my area are just not available, so I have learned to balance the carbs, sugars, and fats that I eat daily.
Does exercise play a role in your success on keto? If so, how?
Due to a spine injury, I am still unable to do a great deal of exercise, but I can walk around my house and property.
If you could offer advice to someone starting keto, what would you say?
The advice that I would give someone right now would be to start right away, especially cutting out refined sugar, because that jump-started my process for the good and the success that I have had thus far.
