How did you discover keto?
I first discovered keto from Dr. Berg.
What did your diet look like prior to adopting keto?
My diet before keto was whatever I wanted to eat, whenever I wanted to eat it. I’ve always been a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy, but I was eating the wrong meat. I didn’t eat grass-fed meat. I would have cereal in the mornings or maybe a protein shake filled with all the wrong things.
At lunch, I would have sandwiches, chips, fruit, and some kind of dessert like Oatmeal Cream Pies or Nutty Bars. For dinner, I would eat pasta or meat. I would eat it with rice or some kind of bread and then have something sweet after, like ice cream or a popsicle. Sometimes I would eat a bowl of ice cream or cereal right before bed! I’ve always been active in the gym for most of my adult life, so I think that prolonged my symptoms.
Did you have any problems with your weight or health before going on keto?
I started experiencing bloating and weight gain. This is what caused me to make a change.
How has your health improved since you started keto?
The bloating went away. I’ve lost about 30 lbs. since I started this keto journey about 2 years ago. I feel like I’m 25 and not 45. My body looks and feels great. I used to feel a random burning sensation in my left foot, mainly, but over time, that has improved. I have more sustained energy.
How does an average day of eating/fasting look for you on keto?
I fast overnight and until lunch. For lunch, I usually eat 2 avocados, 3 eggs, a bowl of vegetables, an apple, and some potato chips made with avocado oil, not seed oil. Dinner, usually some red meat or fish. Maybe a piece of sourdough bread.
Does exercise play a role in your success on keto? If so, how?
I go to the gym one day a week for about an hour and a half. I occasionally walk or run throughout the week or play basketball in my yard.
If you could offer advice to someone starting keto, what would you say?
The hardest part is starting. The initial shock of not eating sugar will eventually wear off. It becomes easier.
Any other details you want to share?
All I can say is that I’ll never go back, fully, to the diet I was on before keto.
