Cortisol is an adrenal gland hormone.
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, essential for regulating immune responses, inflammation, and metabolism. It’s the biological blueprint behind medications like Prednisone, which mimics cortisol’s anti-inflammatory effects and is commonly prescribed for autoimmune conditions and allergic reactions including severe cases of poison ivy.
However, synthetic corticosteroids like Prednisone can suppress your body’s natural cortisol production. In my case, repeated use for poison ivy led to serious health consequences–Prednisone ultimately wreaked havoc on my system.
What makes cortisol so powerful–and potentially disruptive–is its dominance. When stress levels are high, cortisol can override other hormones and physiological processes, even those that support health and healing. It can sabotage your best efforts to eat well, exercise, and maintain hormonal balance.
Cortisol influences:
o Immune function
o Causes Inflammation
o Converts proteins into sugars (glycolysis) which raises blood sugar control hormone.
o And is a dominating hormone – meaning it can override other hormones in the body and also your efforts to balance hormones, lose weight, eat right, exercise . . .
In short, if stress isn’t managed, cortisol can become a silent saboteur–nullifying progress and compromising wellness, no matter how disciplined your lifestyle may be.
