With baby number two in tow, Katie Jones was eager to drop the pregnancy weight. Now in her mid-30s, Jones was finding it more difficult to shed pounds than it had been in the past. So in October of 2017 Jones joined a keto weight-loss competition and found Dr. Berg’s tips while researching the lifestyle.
Everyone in her life was incredibly supportive when she started keto. They showed her unexpected kindness at every turn. “We were living with my in-laws in preparation for my husband’s relocation for work,” Jones said. “My mother in-law was so supportive and loved to cook for us. She was always asking what I could have and always found a way to make dinner keto-friendly.”
Because she was getting so many questions about how she was losing the weight, Jones helped start a Facebook group among her friends. The group has grown to over 300 members who are encouraging one another to stick with it.
After watching many of Dr. Berg’s videos, Jones feels confident in her keto knowledge. Insulin resistance is her biggest takeaway. “It’s so eye-opening and makes you look at food differently,” she said.
She had first-hand familiarity with the effects of too much insulin, because her major challenge was that she was spiking her sugars by constantly snacking. “I grew up just grazing and eating all day,” Jones said. But thanks to keto she feels more in control: no more sugar cravings, no more wanting processed foods. “I love how simple it is.”
Recognizing that everyone makes mistakes, and taking things one step at a time, were very helpful for her. At first she would drink diet sodas with her keto diet—before she learned that aspartame isn’t any better than sugar. Eliminating diet drinks earlier is something she would have done differently if she had known.
Still, Jones says, “Don’t let slip-ups keep you from [success]. The more you keep going, the better you will feel.”
She has lost 34 pounds (15 kg) despite gaining muscle from CrossFit workouts. And in case you’re wondering about the weight loss competition she entered in 2017, Jones proudly took second place.
