Karen Bell's Story

By: Karen Bell

Karen Bell celebrated her keto anniversary on May 1, 2019, noting that she has seen major life improvements since beginning her journey to health. Her goal was to remedy her chronic inflammation and pain that stemmed from her bone-on-bone knees and scoliosis. She also had a chronic cough that had lasted for 14 months and peripheral neuropathy which she aimed to fix as well.

“My mantra has been: ‘It is my natural habit to effortlessly choose food that is simultaneously nutritious and delicious in quantities and at times beneficial to my health, fitness, and pleasure,’” said Bell.

Bell does Dr. Berg’s Healthy Keto, intermittent fasting, and occasionally extended fasting.

At 75 years told, and standing at 5’4”, Bell has lost 83 pounds (38 kg). After spending some time maintaining her current weight, she hopes to lose another 13 pounds (6 kg). Bell doesn’t take any medications.

“My primary care physician told me that I am a ‘superior senior’ and that all of my markers are ‘perfect’. My blood pressure stays around 115 over 65, my A1C is 5.1, my heart rate tends to be around 60, my HDL and triglycerides are spectacular, and my oxygen uptake is 99%,” said Bell. “My BMI, which was formerly in the grossly obese ranges, is now 25. I’m shooting for 23. My LDL is high, but the cardiologist who examined me says it’s just not an issue.”

In addition to all of these improved test results, Bell’s chronic cough completely subsided after only two weeks of eliminating sugar from her diet. The arthritis in her hands went away after two months and several cysts have gradually disappeared or have been greatly reduced.

“No more dry eyes, my nails are incredibly strong, and I haven’t any colds or flu,” she said. “Zero headaches after a lifetime of migraines and I sleep deep and long.

“After getting fat-adapted, I truly had no hunger and no cravings. It’s hard to believe that I’m not craving popcorn, Cheetos, or ice cream, but it takes no willpower to resist. I have a normal relationship with food! I have zero compulsions on the subject.”

Now, Bell is planning to become a certified coach with Dr. Berg as she loves helping others get started or analyzing their progress.

“It’s been a journey not only for the body, but for the mind and spirit as well,” said Bell. “Keto strong! Keto on!”

Favorite Way to Exercise: Stationary biking and limited walking

Favorite Keto Recipe: “It’s fun to create new recipes,” said Bell. “I’m not much of a cook, but I can combine things together in creative ways.”
