Wendy Swing's Story
It’s been nearly a year since Wendy Swing began her keto journey. Stepping on the scale and seeing it read 345 pounds (156 kg) was enough to prompt her to make a major lifestyle change. “I was unhappy and felt embarrassed,” she said.
When you’re struggling with weight, it’s about more than just the way you look. For Swing, although she wasn’t on any medicationyet, she knew that wasn’t far off. She had pain in her knees and it was getting harder and harder to move. “I felt terrible,” she said. “I didn't want to do anything or see anyone.”
She found Dr. Berg on Instagram. She knew low-carb diets worked, but she never had a plan; she would always just wing it on her own. It was Dr. Berg’s plan that gave Swing the structure she needed and his videos proved to be the help she needed. “What he said made sense to me and I felt it was a healthy way to go,” she said.
From Dr. Berg’s videos, she learned everything she now knows about nutrition, how our bodies work, how bad certain oils can be, and of course, insulin. “It all makes sense once it is explained and he really does a thorough job [of] explaining everything,” she said. “He makes so much sense if you are just willing to listen.”
Unfortunately, her family doesn’t feel as strongly about keto and Dr. Berg’s advice. In fact, her son is angry about Swing’s decision to live this way. “I cook for myself separately and I hope one day they will be more interested,” Swing said.
When asked about her other challenges with keto, she pointed out that nothing about the eating is difficult. “We'd all like the weight to come off quicker or maybe for time to pass quicker so we can be our best selves,” she said. “But as far as the nutrition and way of eating, nothing was hard at all.”
Now, Swing describes feeling great, having amazing energy, wondering if she’ll even sleep because the world is at her feet.Previously dreaded activities like picking out clothes in the morning have become fun. Instead of retreating from the world, she hates it when she has to stay home for the day.
“It is no joke that there are absolutely no cravings!” she exclaimed. “My body is fed the proper nutrients that in 49 previous years it has never been. And I think I look younger!” She only wishes she had raised her kids to eat this way.
“Time passes anyway. Give it a chance,” she advises others. “You will be so glad you did.”
Favorite Way to Exercise: “I enjoy brisk walking, whether it's with a good friend or by myself listening to music. Music is a great motivator for me,” says Swing. “I enjoy it and I have watched myself go from walking half a mile to now doing more than 7 miles on any given day.” She enjoys stretching and some yoga as well.
Favorite Keto Recipe: She sticks to the basics, eating one meal a day of vegetables and meat.
