Why Dieting Makes You GAIN Weight

After going on a diet, many people find that, at first, they might lose a few pounds, but then, three weeks later, the weight not only comes right back, but a few pounds that weren’t there initially creep on as well. Each time the person attempts to lose, it becomes harder and harder.

Why is this?

There are actually two main reasons.

The first has to do with fat cells. An average lean person has about 20–40 billion fat cells. As fat cells accumulate fat, they can only double in size, so there is a limit to how much fat they can hold. However, everyone has what are called pre-adipocytes, which are fat cells ready to be born. After the fat cells extend to their limit, these pre-fat cells start being born. And once this happens, they are there for life. They can get smaller but never fewer. The earlier you convert more baby fat cells to mature fat cells, the more difficult it is to lose weight.

The next question is, what triggers these cells?

Insulin; the hormone triggered by sugar. Insulin isn’t triggered by fatty food, just insulin. Interesting, isn’t it?

The second reason it gets harder and harder to lose weight is because of increasingly restrictive diets (low calories). The hypothalamus gland in your brain controls your internal metabolism. It is very adaptive and will signal your body to either speed up or slow down depending on environmental stress. The message you send this gland when you cut calories is STARVATION. This communication causes great stress and a compensatory effect. Your body slows down the burning of fat because food is not plentiful and your body thinks it needs to conserve fuel. So, each time you restrict foods or miss a meal, you are actually triggering more weight gain down the road.

Now, how do you undo this problem?

First of all, NEVER cut calories again. You have to retrain your hypothalamus to always have fuel.

The most fat you can lose is 1 to 2 pounds per week. If you lose more, it just means you are losing water weight, not fat.

So, shrink those fat cells WITHOUT starving, get healthy, lose weight, and feel great!
