Do NOT Consume Farm Raised Fish Anymore

author avatar Dr. Eric Berg 08/31/2023

Eating fish is a healthy and nutritious part of any diet, but there are some types of fish that you should avoid.

Farm-raised fish is one example - this type of fish has been raised in large, commercial farms and often contains higher levels of toxins than wild-caught fish especially farm-raised salmon. They also tend to be much less nutritious due to the methods used in their cultivation.

Farm-raised fish can contain additional toxins such as antibiotics and hormones, which can accumulate in your body over time.

The water they are raised in is typically not carefully monitored or filtered, allowing for the accumulation of pollutants from runoff and other sources. This can lead to higher levels of industrial chemicals such as PCBs, dioxins, and mercury in farm-raised fish.

Wild-caught fish are generally much safer because they live naturally in the ocean or lakes and have access to more natural food sources.

Wild-caught fish tend to be leaner than farm-raised varieties, which can help with weight loss efforts. They also contain higher concentrations of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids as well as more varied micronutrients (vitamins A, D, E, etc.).

For these reasons it is generally recommended that you avoid consuming farm-raised fish whenever possible and stick with wild-caught varieties instead.

If you're looking for an even better option when it comes to sustainability, look for freshwater or deep-sea species that are caught using sustainable fishing methods such as hook & line or traps. These methods produce fewer environmental impacts than other methods like bottom trawling or purse seines nets which can result in bycatch and long-term habitat destruction.

By avoiding farm-raised fish whenever possible and choosing sustainable seafood options instead, you can make a positive contribution towards protecting our marine ecosystems!
